A recloser is a high-voltage, automatic electric switch that resembles a circuit breaker on household electric lines. Both these electrical components are responsible for shutting the power supply in problematic situations, like short circuits. In addition, unlike a circuit breaker, a recloser offers extended benefits like testing the electrical line to doubly ensure whether the problem has been rectified or not. And, if the problem turns out to be temporary, a recloser can also reset itself and restore the power.

A recloser works by detecting and cutting off the power as soon as a problem arises. The recloser puts the power back on after a brief delay, but if the problem is still there, it switches the power off again. The recloser is configured to think the issue is permanent if it persists after three attempts and turns off.
