A Voltage Transformer can be elaborated on as a device which converts energy of one form to another. These types of devices are used most commonly employed to monitor alternating AC or DC current by measuring voltage directly or through a VT. Voltage Transformers can also be referred to as a parallel-connected type of instrument transformer. The primary feature of this device is that they are designed to present negligible load to the supply being measured. They have an accurate voltage ratio and phase relationship which goes on to enable accurate secondary connected metering.There are two basic solutions in the case of a Voltage Transformers – A potential transformer (PT) has an iron-core construction, while a capacitor coupling voltage transformers (CVTs) reduces the voltage level first and then use the iron-core transformer to get a further reduction in voltage with the help of a capacitor coupling principle. Both of these transformer types are usually free-standing in nature. The potential transformer is more often than not used to measure the voltages at substation busses. However, the CVTs can be used for similar measurement purposes on transmission lines individually. The transformers are used to bring the voltages down to a much lower level which is accepted by protective relays because the power systems voltage levels range go way beyond kilovolt values.
