Protection Relays by Application

What is a protection relay?

Protection relays are devices which identify faulty circuit component in the system and isolate this defective element from the rest of the system. Protection relays also known as electric relays, are electromagnetically controlled electrical switch, also known as an electromechanical switch which uses small current to create a magnetic field in a coil within a magnetic core that is used to operate a switch to command a much larger current. When there is any abnormally in the electric circuit, these contacts in turns close and complete the circuit breaker trip coil circuit, hence circuit breaker tripped for disconnecting the faulty portion of the electrical circuit, ensuring that the electrical supply remains uninterrupted.
