Cause:
The best practice to add a custom measurement before adding is by using the “Manual Data Editor”.
The main reasons are:
- Manual Data Editor adheres to naming convention rules in PME,
- Special Characters are largely restricted
- The most common predicates can be set up in the interface
- Cumulative, Unit, Aggregation
The most important aspect of this best practice is the naming convention rules and the avoidance of special characters in the name. If a user were to add a custom measurement in another manner such as custom measurement logged via a meter, logged via the VIP, setup via ETL or OPC driver they could technically add as many special characters as they like to the name. The problem is these special characters would make it impossible to edit the custom measurement and associated metadata settings later. Therefore, the best practice is to always use a sanctioned tool such as the “Manual Data Editor” to ensure the new custom measurement is set up as expected in the system.
Resolution:
Manual Data Editor is found in the Management Console (Tools tab -> System -> Manual Data Editor).
You can use Manual Data Editor to create new, custom measurements in PME. These measurements are available anywhere in the software.
To create a new measurement:
- In Manual Data Editor, click Load New Data to open the Load Data dialog box.
- In Load Data, click Create new Measurement to open the Create new Measurement dialog box.
- In Create new Measurement, enter the relevant information for the new measurement.
- Click Create to add the new measurement to the system.
- (Optional) Repeat steps 2-4 to add additional measurements.
- Close Manual Data Editor.
