Drives and starters control motors in fundamentally different ways, so their protection functions are not directly comparable. (For example: Stall Monitoring on an ATV drive vs. Overload Protection on an ATS soft starter.)

ATV630 – Stall Monitoring Function
On the ATV630, the stall monitoring function supervises both motor current and motor speed. As described in the manual, these two parameters are used to prevent motor overload conditions.

In practice, this function operates during both dynamic and static states. Its main purpose is to detect situations such as a locked rotor—where the motor current exceeds the configured threshold while the speed falls below a defined limit for a certain time. When this happens, the drive trips (typical case: rotor lock at start).

It is important to note that motor speed is regulated by a drive, which is not the case with an Altistart soft starter.


ATS490 – Overload Behavior

Unlike the ATV, the ATS490 monitors only the current.

For thermal overload protection of the motor, the ATS already includes an internal thermal model. The starter trips when the calculated motor thermal capacity reaches the configured threshold.

The purpose of the overload detection on the ATS490 is more to identify long‑duration load drifts in the process. For example, once the starter is bypassed, the motor current typically stabilizes. If a mechanical issue or increased load occurs later, the resulting overcurrent over time is detected by the overload function.

The protection function that more closely matches the ATS overload function is the OLD (Overload Detection) on the drive.
