How to Troubleshoot a "Site Wiring Fault" in a Single-Phase Smart-UPS?

Question:

How to Troubleshoot a "Site Wiring Fault" in a Single-Phase Smart-UPS?

Product:
SCL, SMC, SMT, SMTL, SMX, SRT, SRTL units

Environment:
North America 120VAC Models Only

Description:
The "Site Wiring Fault" error means your UPS has detected a potential problem with the electrical wiring of the outlet it is connected to. This condition may pose a safety risk and could affect the performance or protection of your connected equipment.

These are a sample indication of the "Site Wiring Fault" visible on the display ((From Left to Right - SMC, SMX, and SMT Models)

Reasons/Recommendation:

The UPS may display a Site Wiring Fault message or G.00 (on SMC Models) if it detects one of the following conditions with the electrical outlet or building wiring:
  • Overloaded neutral wire (>5 Volts AC measured between Neutral and Ground)
The voltage between the neutral and ground connections is higher than expected, which may indicate a problem with the building's electrical system
  • Reversed Polarity
The hot and neutral wires in the outlet are wired incorrectly (hot and neutral wires are reversed).
  • Missing or Improper Ground Connection
The outlet is not properly grounded, or a 3-prong-to-2-prong adapter is being used, preventing the UPS from detecting a proper ground.

To help ensure safe operation and protect connected equipment:
  • Disconnect the UPS from the wall outlet immediately.
  • Connect the UPS to a different, properly wired outlet to help isolate the issue.
  • Inspect the outlet using a standard outlet tester, if available.
  • Contact a qualified electrician or your facility's electrical maintenance team to inspect and correct the wiring issue.

A Site Wiring Fault may affect the UPS's ability to provide the intended level of protection for connected equipment. We recommend removing the UPS from service and discontinuing its use until the wiring fault has been corrected.

For information about Site Wiring Faults on Back-UPS and Surge Arrestor units, please refer to FAQ FA158817.

For SRT units with the XLW suffix, please refer to FAQ000265184.
