Does an automatic molded case switch provide overcurrent protection?

Article available in these languages: Spanish

Issue:
What makes an automatic switch different from a circuit breaker?

Product line:
Switches

Resolution:
No, an automatic molded case switch does not provide overcurrent protection and cannot be applied in place of an overcurrent protective device such as a circuit breaker or fused switch. However, it does differ from a non-automatic molded case switch in that it does have a trip point. This trip point is purely to protect itself and does not offer any protection for the downstream load or wiring. The trip point varies for each individual switch.
