Issue:
Altivar Process Drive: Understanding Normal vs Heavy Duty.

Product Line:
Altivar Process Drive (ATV630, ATV930, ATV650, ATV950, ATV660, ATV960, ATV680, ATV980)

Environment:
All of the Altivar Process Drives

Cause:
None

Resolution:

Explanation
The main difference lies within the overload capability of the drive. This setting adjusts the drives current limitations.
The "Current Limitation" limits your current based on the overload capability setting of the drive for a maximum time frame of 60s.
Typically this is your initial starting current
The drive overload capability can be changed by adjusting the "Dual Rating" parameter in the drive (under menu 5.2 Motor Parameters). There are 2 different settings: Normal Duty / Normal Rating and Heavy Duty / High rating.

To access the parameter:
[Complete settings] [Motor parameters] [Dual Rating] drt

Overload Capability
ATV600:
ND +10% (Current Limitations up to 110% of rated current)
HD +50% (Current Limitations up to 150% of rated current)

ATV900:
ND +20% (Current Limitations up to 120% of rated current)
HD +50% (Current Limitations up to 150% of rated current)

Understand that when changing the overload capability from normal duty to heavy duty you are de rating the drive to a lower hp size.
Example below:
ATV630D75N4
ND +10% (110%) = Drive Rating of 100hp @ 480 Vac
HD +50% (150%) = Drive Rating of 75hp @ 480 Vac

Tips:
When doing a drive selection, its always a good idea to choose a heavy duty drive if you are not certain the Normal Duty rating will be sufficient.
Use the links below to access the ATV630 and ATV930 installation manuals and look in the Technical Data section under Electrical Data to find the details on Normal Duty and Heavy Duty.
