Can I power a DC motor with an Altivar drive?
Issue:
Needs to control a DC motor with an Altivar VFD

Product Line:
All VFDs

Environment:
All

Cause:
Information needed on feature set.

Resolution:
Variable Frequency Drives are designed to power 3 phase induction type AC motors only.  They can not power single phase motors, DC motors, or Servo type motors.
They can power 3 phase asynchronous 'squirrel cage' type motors.  Some models can also power permanent magnet three phase synchronous motors but this  requires very specific information on the motor to configure properly.  Mis-configuration of a VFD on a permanent magnet motor can cause permanent damage to the magnet and render the motor inoperable.
