Can a contactor, placed between the VFD output and the motor, be used for Start/Stop control of the motor?
Issue:
Planning to run VFD continuously at 60Hz output and put a contactor between the motor and the output of the VFD drive to cycle the motor off and on.

Product Line:
Altivar drive

Environment:
All

Cause:
Contactor installed on the output of VFD drive.

Resolution:
This is not recommended and is a misapplication for the VFD.  The contactor action of opening and closing the pulse width modulation from the VFD can damage the drive's IGBT`s ( output devices ) and the motor.
Start/Stop control should be applied to the VFD.
