Why is it necessary to use larger size drive and a line reactor when applying single phase input to a drive?
Issue:
Requirements for applying single phase input to a drive

Product Line:
Altivar Drives

Environment:
N/A

Cause:
Customer would like to connect the drive using single phase input supply voltage.

Resolution:

NOTE: Not all drives have been tested for single phase input. The information here is general. Specific information can be found in the installation guide for the specific drive in question. Or, contact technical support for AC drives at 888-778-2733 (888-SQUARED)

The rectifiers must be rated to carry the increased motor current drawl due to single phasing the input.
Single phase input greatly increases the voltage ripple on the DC bus capacitors. This causes additional stress on the caps. A 3% line reactor helps reduce this ripple.
