Rear Serial Ports on SAGE 4400 RTU – Functions and Pinout

Environment:

Substation automation systems using SAGE 4400 RTU for communication with IEDs and master stations.

Cause:

Users may be unsure about the number of rear serial ports, their function, and pin assignments for connecting external devices.

Resolution:

The SAGE 4400 RTU rear panel includes 17 RS232 connectors:

  • 16 serial ports for communication with IEDs and/or master stations.
  • 1 PPP port, which is electrically in parallel with the front PPP port for Point-to-Point Protocol connections.

Each rear serial port uses a DB9 connector with the following pinout:

Notes:

  • IRIG-B output is available on all 16 RS232 ports for time synchronization.
  • The +5V option on Pin 1 can power auxiliary communication devices (up to 5W total).
  • Baud rates are individually configurable per port (300–19,200 bps; PPP supports 38,400 bps).
