How do you change the Management VLAN on a Modicon Swtich without losing connection?
Issue
Change management VLAN
Product Line
Modicon Switch
Resolution
Procedure to Change Management VLAN
1. Open the Graphical User Interface (GUI) of the switch
2. Ensure the new VLAN (e.g., VLAN 3) is already created and configured in the switch. Use the Switching > VLAN > Configuration dialog to create and name the VLAN if needed.
3. Navigate to the Switching > VLAN > Port dialog.
4. Assign the new device management VLAN (e.g., VLAN 3) to this port. After clicking Ok, the port becomes a member of the new VLAN and transmits data packets untagged for that VLAN.
5. Select the port you will use to connect to the device in the future (this should be the port you are currently connected through, or a port you can access after the change).
Which Port to Select
To avoid disconnection, you must select the port you are currently using to access the switch (the management port) when assigning the new management VLAN. This ensures your connection remains active after the VLAN change. If you select a different port, you may lose access to the device until you connect through a port that is a member of the new management VLAN.
Additional Notes
- The VLAN must be pre-configured before assigning it as the management VLAN.
- If using certain redundancy protocols, only use VLAN IDs ≥2 for device management.
