“NAK: Target Unsupported”
This error is commonly seen when attempting to upgrade the Ethernet firmware on an ION7300 series meter.
Product Line:
ION 7300
Environment:
ION Setup
Cause:
This error can occur for the following reasons:
- Attempting to upgrade Ethernet firmware on an ION7300 series meter while connected via serial communications.
- Ethernet firmware upgrades on Ethernet‑capable meters must be performed over Ethernet, not over the serial port.
- A firmware and hardware revision mismatch, such as:
- Attempting to upgrade a revision A ION7300 meter (firmware versions 102–213) using revision B firmware (versions 250–285).
- Attempting to upgrade a 7550 RTU meter from firmware revision 373 to revision 400.
- These firmware versions are intended for different hardware revisions, and upgrading between them is not supported.
- Firmware release notes describe the specific hardware differences.
Resolution:
Warning: Before downloading or installing any firmware updates, verify that the firmware iscompatible with the exact meter model and hardware revision. If unsure, contact Technical Support for guidance.
Warning:
Disconnect the device from all monitoring software before performing a firmware upgrade.
To resolve the issue:
- When upgrading firmware on an Ethernet‑capable ION7300 series meter, ensure the upgrade is performed using Ethernet communications, not serial.
- Verify that the firmware version matches the hardware revision of the meter.
- Revision A firmware cannot be used on Revision B meters, and vice versa.
- Confirm compatibility using the firmware release notes before proceeding.
- Retry the firmware upgrade using the correct communication method and compatible firmware.
