Resolution:
It can be mounted on its side or back, however it will no longer be rated Nema 3R. It will then be rated Nema 1. It should not be mounted with the wiring compartment facing upwards. This could result in the wiring compartment temperature exceediing the rating of the insulation system of the conductors contained therein.
