Can the coils on a Class 8903 mechanically held lighting contactor be continuously energized?

Issue:
Can the coils on a Class 8903 mechanically held lighting contactor be continuously energized?

Product Line:
8903 lighting contactors

Environment:
Products sold and used in the United States

Cause:
Can the coils on a Class 8903 mechanically held lighting contactor be continuously energized?

Resolution:
There are two control coils provided with mechanically held contactors. Typically the latch coil or standard device coil is rated for continuous duty and the unlatch coil or the mechanical latch mechanism coil is not rated for continuous duty. Maintained contacts may be used with mechanically held contactors because the devices are supplied with coil clearing contacts which mean once the signal is sent to latch or unlatch coil and the device power contacts change state the coil circuit is opened via the coil clearing contacts. When using a single pole pilot device factory modification (Form R6) or field installation of an interposing relay is required for proper operation.
