Product Line:
PowerPacT H, J, L M, P, R Circuit Breakers
Resolution:
No, mechanical and compression lugs including power distribution connectors (PDC) are not approved for use with fine stranded wire. This includes the use of a sleeve / ferrule / thin copper shim stock used to hold the fine stranded wire together. This applies to PowerpacT B, H, J, L, M, P and R frame breakers. Only class B or C cable is approved for use in the lugs per UL486.
The fine stranded wires of Class D cable used in mechanical lugs can get caught up in the wire binding screw causing a false torque reading resulting in a loose connection. Further a sleeve / ferrule / thin copper shim can break when being compressed and again strands of wire can get caught up in the wire binding screw. With compression lugs the fine strands do not compress properly which can result in a loose connection and can pull out of the lug.
NOTE: Finely stranded wire is also referred to as welder's cable or DLO diesel locomotive cable.
