What causes an OCF fault on the ATS48 soft starter?
Issue:
The ATS48 soft starter displays an OCF (Overcurrent Fault) during startup or operation.
Resolution:
Follow these troubleshooting steps to identify and resolve the cause of the OCF fault:
-
Verify ATS48 Parameter Settings
- In the SEt menu:
- In: Ensure the motor rated current (FLA) is set correctly.
- ILt (Current Limit): Increase if the motor requires more starting current. Avoid setting it excessively high, as this can trigger an immediate OCF fault.
- ACC (Acceleration Time): Increase the acceleration time if the motor requires a longer start.
- tq0 (Initial Starting Torque): If available, verify that it is not set too high, as this may cause an overcurrent fault during startup.
- In the drC menu:
- bst (Voltage Boost Level): Reduce the setting if it is too high, as excessive voltage boost can cause an OCF fault.
- CLP (Torque Control): For applications experiencing surging or oscillation during startup, try setting torque control to OFF.
- In the SEt menu:
-
Inspect Motor Wiring
- Check all connections between the ATS48 and the motor for loose, damaged, or incorrect wiring.
-
Check for Mechanical Obstruction
- Ensure the motor and driven equipment rotate freely and are not blocked or jammed.
-
Verify Motor Rotation
- Confirm that the motor is rotating in the correct direction.
-
Confirm Proper Sizing
- Verify that both the motor and the ATS48 soft starter are correctly sized for the application.
-
Measure Output Current
- Start the motor and measure the current on all three output phases of the soft starter.
- Check for excessive current draw or significant phase imbalance.
-
Test the Motor Across the Line (If Possible)
- Run the motor directly from line power and measure the current on all three phases.
- Current should be balanced and remain below the motor's rated full-load current.
- If the motor fails to run correctly or draws excessive current when connected directly to line power, the issue is likely with the motor or the connected load, not the soft starter.
