When does a Meter require an Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS)?

Issue
When does a Meter require an Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS)?

Product Line
ION and Powerlogic meters

Resolution

An UPS or some form of uninterruptible power supply should be used for control power when:

  • A meter does not have control power ride through.
  • The need to capture alarms, events, waveform captures, or logged data is required in a critical environment.
  • Communications to the meter should not be lost.
  • Status inputs connected to the meter are being monitored by a PLC or other SCADA systems.

A UPS is not required when:

  • The meter is metering only instantaneous data.
  • Missing events and data are acceptable during power outages.
