Is a molded case switch available as the main for a panelboard?

Issue:
Molded case switch available as the main for a Panelboard

Product Line:
Panelboards

Environment:
UL 67, UL 50, CSA C22.2 No.'s 29 & 94-1989, NEMA PB1, NFPA 70 Art. 408, Federal Specification W-P-115C Type 1 Class 1 , 2000 IBC, 1995 NBCC

Cause:
Occasionally a main switch at the panelboard is desired, but tripping of a main breaker is not desired.

Resolution:
So long as there is a molded case switch offer available for what would have been the main breaker of the panelboard, a molded case switch can be provided instead of a main breaker in an NQ, NF or, yes, even an I-Line panelboard.

Because "molded case switch" is not appearing in product selection software as an available option, the panelboard is selected as a main breaker panelboard, then under "special pricing" a "note to engineering" is added, requesting that the main be furnished as a molded case switch.  There is no price change for this modification.

Please note that the replacement of a main circuit breaker with a molded case switch may have ramifications for specific applications, and therefore individual applications may (but may not always) necessitate further careful review.
