PlantStruxure PES [V4.0]:PES VM fails to start and Control and SCADA participant cannot be accessed from Engineering Client. How do I resolve this issue?

This Knowledge base article explains user on how to resolve  the issue which is "PES VM fails to start and Control and SCADA participant cannot be accessed from Engineering Client. Error "Failed to start Pes.Vm.4.0#0 on localhost : Unknown reason, please check logs" error. This article is valid for PES4.0.

The error below is displayed when trying to access Unity (Control) or Vijeo Citect (SCADA) participant from Engineering Client.

In the PES Server logs (path: %appdata%\Schneider Electric\Process Expert 4.0) following information can be found.

“2015-06-12 14:15:25.3146 INFO  [T  3] Pes.Vm.4.0#0 on localhost Need to generate because Version file at 'C:\Users\Engineer\AppData\Local\Schneider Electric\Process Expert 4.0\Vm\Pes.Vm.4.0.Win7.Rc2.vers' does not exist.”

To resolve this issue follow the steps below:

1. Backup PES database.
2. Browse to PES v4.0 installation files. Navigate to Pes_v_4.0.0.586\PSx_System_20121128\PSx Virtual Machine folder.
3. Extract Pes.Vm.4.0.Win7.Rc2.7z zip file using zip file extracting software such as 7Zip.
4. Restore this file (.vdi extension) to <Drive> \ProgramData\Schneider Electric\Process Expert 4.0\VM, where <Drive> is location of ProgramData folder, e.g. C:\ or D:\.

Note: Consequences of replacing VDI file below.
1. If you have installed Hotfixes related to Control or Supervision participant then you will need to reinstall them.
2. VM will have to be generated again.
