Power Monitoring Expert 8.0 - why is my ION_Data upgrade from PME 7.2.2 taking so long and how do I know if it is still doing something?

Issue

During an upgrade from PME 7.2.2 to PME 8.0, the ION_Data database upgrade can take a long time to complete. The installer may appear stuck on the “Create Database…” step, but processing is still occurring in the background.

Product Line

Power Monitoring Expert 8.0

Environment

SQL Server

ION_Data database

Cause

PME 8.0 introduced significant changes to how Power Quality (PQ) data is processed to improve the Alarms application and remove the PQ Aggregator service.
As a result:

  • The upgrade must process large amounts of PQ data and events.
  • Processing time depends on:
    • Size of ION_Data
    • Number of records in EventLog2
    • Types of events in EventLog2
    • Amount of PQ data in DataLog2 (sag/swell and transient durations/magnitudes)

Resolution

To check if the upgrade is still running and estimate progress, use the following SQL queries in SQL Server Management Studio:

Step 1: Check PQ Data Processing

Run this query multiple times (5–10 seconds apart) to see if the count changes:

-USE ION_Data

-SELECT COUNT(*) FROM PQ_EVENTS

  • If the count is changing, PQ data is still being processed.
  • If the count is not changing, is non-zero, and the upgrade step has been running for at least 10 minutes, PQ processing is complete and the upgrade has moved on to event/alarm processing.

Step 2: Check Alarm Processing

Run this query multiple times:

-USE ION_Data

-SELECT COUNT(*) FROM AlarmLo

  • Compare this to the count of EventLog2:
-USE ION_Data
-SELECT COUNT(*) FROM EventLog2
  • Expected ratio:
    • Unary events → 1 alarm per event
    • Binary events → 1 alarm per 2 events
  • Final AlarmLog count should be 50–100% of EventLog2 count.

Performance Estimates

  • PQ processing: ~10 minutes per 1 million PQ_EVENTS records
  • Alarm processing: ~1 hour per 10 million events
(Estimates vary based on hardware and data characteristics.)

Notes

  • Overall ION_Data size does not correlate directly with upgrade time.
  • Avoid giving time estimates based solely on database size.
  • For databases >10 GB, check PQ_EVENTS and EventLog2 counts before upgrade for a rough estimate.
  • Ensure hardware meets System Design Guide specs. Poor disk performance will significantly increase upgrade time.
  • If you need assistance or encounter issues during the upgrade, contact Schneider Electric Technical Support for guidance.
  • Later PME versions (PME 2020–2024) use optimized upgrade processes, reducing these delays.
