Why can't I ping or connect to my M580 over Ethernet using a Virtual Machine?

Issue
When trying to connect to either the M580 or eNOC module Unity is returning the 'not a valid address' message. When a ping is attempted a 'host unreachable' message is returned.

Product line
Unity Pro, Control Expert, M580

Resolution
One possible cause could be working inside a virtual environment with NAT enabled, which means it will automatically assign the IP address in the virtual environment the same as the IP address of the host machine. If you set the proper IP address on the host PC,  you should then successfully ping the CPU and eNOC. What is typically done wrong is configuring the IP LAN inside the virtual environment, when really, all you need to do is allow it to obtain the IP address automatically.
