Can an Altivar Drive Be Used to Generate Three-Phase Power for an Entire Machine or System?

Resolution:
No. Altivar drives are designed specifically to power and control motor loads. They should not be used as a general three-phase power supply for an entire machine or system.

While many Altivar drives can convert single-phase input power to three-phase output (depending on the drive model and ratings), the output is intended only for motor operation. The drive varies voltage and frequency to control motor speed and performance.

Using the drive output to power non-motor loads—such as control transformers, relay coils, power supplies, lighting, heaters, or other resistive loads—is considered a misapplication and may result in improper operation or equipment damage.

If a machine includes additional electrical loads, those loads must be powered from a separate, properly rated power source. The Altivar drive should be used only for the motor it is designed to control.
