Does the transfer switch require clearance at the back?

“Front-connected” floor-mounted transfer switches DO NOT require rear clearance.  However, “rear-connected” floor-mounted transfer switches DO.

What does “front-connected” and “rear-connected” mean?

“Front-connected” means that the terminal lugs in the transfer switch are accessible from the front once the door/s are opened.  On the other hand, “rear-connected” means that the terminal lugs are accessible from the rear or back of the transfer enclosure.
