Choosing the appropriate Surge Rating for an SPD comes down to two things:

1) The location of the SPD within the electrical distribution, and;

2) The location of the facility (environmental surroundings)

Schneider Electric recommends the following surge current ratings based on SPD location within the electrical distribution.

Service Entrance Locations 240 kA

Distribution Locations 120-160 kA

Branch Locations 50-120 kA
