How do I troubleshoot the Altivar Process Drive when it will not connect or communicate while over a Modbus Serial Network?
Resolution:
If your drive is not connecting or communicating over a Modbus serial network, the issue is typically related to wiring, network configuration, communication settings, or control setup. Use the steps below as a basic troubleshooting guide.
Drive Will Not Connect
1. Verify Installation
- Ensure a Modbus serial cable (not Ethernet) is connected to the correct port.
- Confirm proper pin wiring based on the required pinout.
- Minimize electrical interference:
- Use separate conduits for control and power wiring
- Add terminating resistors if the drive is the last device on the network
2. Check Network Configuration
- Make sure there are no duplicate Modbus addresses on the network.
- Verify all network devices are properly configured and compatible.
3. Confirm Drive Communication Settings
In the drive settings, verify:
- Modbus Address
- Baud Rate
- Other serial parameters (parity, stop bits if applicable)
After making changes, always power cycle the drive.
4. Check Status Indicators
- Review the drive’s LED indicators:
- The Modbus (Eth NS) LED shows communication status
- Use LED behavior to confirm if the network is active or faulted. Eth NS (Embeded Modbus) - Indicates the Modbus serial link connection status
Drive Connects But Will Not Run
1. Verify Communication
- Confirm you can read data from the drive
- Ensure you are using the correct Modbus registers for reading and writing. Verify the following documents:
2. Check Control Configuration
- Confirm the drive is set to Network Control
- Path: [Complete Settings] → [Command and Reference]
- Verify:
- Command source
- Frequency reference source
3. Review Communication Mapping
- Navigate to: [Display] → [Communication Map]
Ensure the correct registers are assigned for command and reference values
4. Validate Command Channels
- Check:
- Command register
- Reference frequency channel
- Reference frequency value
