PowerChute Network Shutdown Windows Installer does not handle certain special characters correctly.

Issue:

PowerChute Network Shutdown Windows Installer does not handle certain special characters correctly.

This article outlines a known limitation in the PowerChute Network Shutdown Windows installer. The issue affects the handling of some UTF-8 special characters when entering passwords during installation. This can cause login failures after the installation.

Product:

PowerChute Network Shutdown 5.1 and 5.2

Environment:

All support Windows Operating Systems

Cause:

During the installation of PowerChute Network Shutdown, passwords containing UTF-8 special characters may be accepted in the installer UI, but they are not correctly interpreted. This can result in login failures after installation.

UTF-8 characters misinterpreted by Installer:

• Unicode punctuation eg:

• – — “ ” ‘

• Non-ASCII currency eg: € ¥ ₹ ₩

• Accented characters eg: é ñ ü ç

• Mathematical symbols eg: √ ∞ ∑ ≤ ≥ ≈

• Non-Latin scripts eg: مرحبا) Arabic), Привет (Russian)

• Emoji

• UTF-8 encoded control chars eg: U+200B, U+202E UTF-8

Solution:

• Use only ASCII characters in passwords during installation.

• Avoid accented letters, symbols, emojis, or non-Latin scripts.

• If UTF-8 characters are required for security policies, you can change the password using the PowerChute Setup Wizard or via the INI file after installation.

Characters supported by Installer:

• ASCII letters/digits eg: a-z, A-Z, 0-9

• Basic symbols e.g.: !@#$%^&*()
