Troubleshooting SAGE 4400 RTU Using LED Indicators

Substation automation systems using SAGE 4400 RTU for monitoring and control.

Cause:

Users may encounter operational issues and need a quick method to diagnose problems without advanced tools.

Resolution:

The SAGE 4400 front panel includes LEDs that provide real-time status for communication ports and system conditions:

  • Comm LEDs (per RS232 port):
    • DCD/+5V: Data Carrier Detect or +5V output
    • RX: Receive activity
    • TX: Transmit activity
    • RTS: Request to Send
    • CTS: Clear to Send
  • System LEDs:
    • Power: Indicates RTU power (normally ON)
    • Run: CPU running (blinking = normal; steady ON = Safe/Recovery mode; OFF = CPU not running)
    • Reset: Illuminates during reset signal (normally OFF)
    • Local: Indicates Local/Remote switch position (Local disables controls)
    • Time Source Failed: Configured time source failure
    • IED Failed: Communication failure with one or more IEDs
    • Alarm 1 & 2: Relay energized status
    • User Logged In: Active user session
    • Config Changed: New configuration XML file loaded but not yet activated
    • RLL Running: ISaGRAF logic program active
    • Ethernet Link: Valid Ethernet connection detected
