Can I run an ATS softstarter without a motor load or motor connection?
Soft Starts require a load in order to operate properly.
Softstarts use SCR's to switch the voltage on and off to the motor.
An SCR requires current flow to operate properly. With no load, there is no current flow.
With no current flow, the soft starter will fault with PHF fault when the run command is given.
On the ATS48 and ATS480 models of soft start, it is possible to run the soft start with an undersized motor, for testing only.
Parameter SST, under the Advanced Settings menu can be set to ON. This will allow the starter to be run with a motor as small as 10% of the rating of the starter.
Note:
• SSt returns to the OFF state as soon as the control voltage is disconnected. On the next
power up, the PHF fault and the CLP parameter return to their initial configuration.
• SST is only dedicated for maintenance and testing of the starter.
