What is the function of the OIL parameter of an ATS48 series soft starter and how do I configure it?
Issue:
OIL parameter configuration of an ATS48 series soft starter
Resolution:
The OIL (Current Overload Activation) parameter in an ATS48 soft starter provides an optional current-based alarm or fault function. It allows you to trigger an alarm or stop the motor when the current exceeds a user-defined threshold.
By default, OIL is set to OFF and does not need to be configured unless a custom current limit is required.
Note: The OIL function is separate from the ATS48's Thermal Overload Protection. It is intended for application-specific current monitoring rather than motor thermal protection.
Configure a Custom Current Alarm or Fault
-
Set OIL to:
- DEF = Generates a fault and stops the motor.
- ALA = Generates an alarm only.
-
Set LOC to the desired current threshold.
- Adjustable from 50% to 300% of the motor's nominal current (IN).
-
Set IN (in the SET menu) to the motor's full-load current (FLC).
-
Set TOL to define how long the current can remain above the LOC threshold before the alarm or fault is triggered.
Example: Conveyor Jam Protection
A conveyor is driven by a motor rated at 100 A full-load current, but normal operation never requires more than 80 A. If current exceeds 80 A, it may indicate a jam or mechanical problem.
Configure the parameters as follows:
SET Menu
- IN = 100 A
PRO Menu
- OIL = DEF
- LOC = 80%
- TOL = 5 s
With these settings, the soft starter will trip on an OLC fault and stop the motor if the current exceeds 80 A for more than 5 seconds.
Alarm-Only Configuration
If you want a warning without stopping the motor:
- Set OIL = ALA
- Assign Relay Output R3 = AIL
In this configuration, the soft starter activates an alarm when the current threshold is exceeded, while allowing the motor to continue running.
