Can a 2-pole CAFI, GFI or EPD breaker be used to feed (2) 120 V single-pole circuits that share a common neutral (shared neutral)?

Published date: 10 June 2020

Issue:
Can a 2-pole CAFI, GFI or EPD breaker be used on (2) 120 V circuits with a shared neutral?

Product Line:
Circuit Breakers

Environment:
Applies to 2-pole QO, QOB and HOM circuit breakers with suffix CAFI, GFI or EPD.

Cause:
Two 120 V circuits are fed with a multi-wire conductor, consisting of 2 hot wires, 1 neutral wire, and 1 ground wire. The two 120 V circuits are sharing the neutral wire.

Resolution:
Yes, 2 pole CAFI, GFI, or EPD circuit breakers can be used to feed two single pole 120 Vac circuits that share a common neutral.
This situation often occurs when a multi-wire conductor is used to feed the 2 circuits. These may be applied on the following systems:
  • 2p CAFI: Ok for use on a 120/240 V system. NOT ok for use on a 208Y/120 V system.
  • 2p GFI and 2p EPD: Ok for use on a 120/240 V system as well as a 208Y/120 V system.
