Do all the Square D General Duty and Heavy Duty Safety Switches come with Arc Shields or Arc Suppressors?
Issue:
Product Design Features

Product Line:
Heavy Duty Safety Switches

Resolution:
Heavy Duty Safety Switches = HDSS
General Duty Safety Switches = GDSS

All the 600 Vac Max. HDSS will come with an Arc Suppressor. Most of the 240 Vac Max. GDSS and HDSS will come with an Arc Shield.
EXCEPTION: The 800 and 1200 A, 240 Vac heavy duty safety switches do NOT come with arc shields, as they are not required. These switches have a phenolic barrier between each phase.

NOTE: The arc shields or suppressors are NOT designed to make the switch finger safe. They are designed to suppress or shield the ARC when the switch blades make and break the circuit.

As of January 1, 2023 ALL the 30 Through 200amp General Duty, Heavy Duty and Double Throw Safety Switches have the NEC Service Barrier requirement built into the Arc Suppressors as standard and a separate kit is NOT required. For ALL the 400amp through 1200amp, See the FAQ = FAQ0001418 for the Catalog number of the Service Barrier kit to meet the UL and NEC Service Entrance Requirements.

For the New VH/VHU HDSS all the replacement Arc Shield/Arc Suppressor Kits are shown below in the table. These kits can also be used for the later Series F(F01 to F07) HDSS from 30A up to 200amp.
