How can I setup a permanent magnet synchronous motor on an Altivar Process Drive?

Resolution:
It is strongly recommended to use SoMove when configuring a permanent magnet synchronous motor.

For Altivar 600 Series, Synchronous motor control is available starting with firmware version V1.2 and they are only compatible with Open Loop control types. The rest of the configuration remains the same for both ATV600 and ATV900 series.

Follow the next steps:

1. Select the Motor Control Type

Go to:

[Complete settings] > [Motor parameters] > [Motor Control Type] (Ctt)

Select the appropriate motor control type:

  • [Sync. mot.] (Syn): Open-loop control for permanent magnet synchronous motors.
  • [Sync.CL] (FSy): Open-loop synchronous motor control for motors with encoders or sinusoidal electromotive force (EMF).
  • [SYN_U VC] (SYnU): Open-loop synchronous motor control for variable-torque applications.
  • [Rel. Mot.]: Open-loop control for synchronous reluctance motors without permanent magnets. Intended for variable-torque applications.

2. Enter the Motor Data

Go to:

[Complete settings] > [Motor parameters] > [Motor data]

Enter the required motor parameters:

  • [Sync Nominal I] (nCrS): Synchronous motor nominal current
  • [Nom SyncMotor Speed] (nSPS): Nominal synchronous motor speed
  • [Nom Motor torque] (tqS): Nominal motor torque
  • [Pole pairs] (PPnS): Number of motor pole pairs
  • [Angle setting type] (ASt): Angle setting method
  • [SyncMotor Stator R] (rSAS): Synchronous motor stator resistance
  • [Sync Nominal Freq] (FrSS): Synchronous motor nominal frequency

Use the motor manufacturer's data whenever possible. The motor nameplate may not contain all the information required for proper configuration. If possible, obtain the motor datasheet and performance curves from the motor manufacturer in case additional data is required.

3. Perform an Angle Test if Required

For motors with an encoder, an angle test may be required.

Go to:

[Complete settings] > [Motor parameters] > [Motor data] > [Angle test setting]

4. Perform Motor Autotuning

Go to:

[Complete settings] > [Motor parameters] > [Motor data] > [Motor tune]

Before performing the autotune:

  • Make sure the motor is properly connected to the drive.
  • Make sure the motor has cooled down.

If the motor does not operate correctly after the configuration and adjustments or you encounter an error, please contact Schneider Electric Advanced Technical Support for further assistance as fine tuning will be necessary.
