Issue:
Clearances of Transformers to objects above
Product Line:
LV Transformers
Environment:
Applies to Ventilated Transformers by SquareD/Schneider Electric
Cause:
Transformers installed in limited height clearance situations
Resolution:
Suggested minimum clearance from top of a ventilated Transformer to heat-sensitive equipment mounted directly above it or the ceiling above it is 36". This allows proper evacuation of the heated air from the core/coil. The surface of a ceiling above the Transformer should be constructed with the knowledge that air up to 50°C above ambient can be emitted from the Transformer vent openings. The installer should also monitor the temperature of the upper unit to insure that it is not overheating, making sure that the top unit’s ambient temperature does not exceed the 30C average with the BTUs rising up from the lower unit. Also, it is good practice to install a metal barrier or baffle between vertically mounted Transformers to prevent heat from the lower unit from rising and heating the upper unit. This applies to EE, EX and EXN series Transformers.
