What is the interrupting rating of our low voltage dry type distribution transformers?
Issue:
Is there an interrupting rating available for low voltage transformer?

Product Line:
Square D transformers

Environment:
EX transformers, EE transformers, resin encapsulated

Cause:

Resolution:

Transformers are not circuit breakers or fuses and, as such, do not interrupt current. Therefore it is impossible for a transformer to have an interrupting rating.

Should a transformer be developed with an integral over current protective (OCP) device, that device would have an interrupting rating that would then apply to the overall device, that is the transformer with the integral OCP. This is not likely to occur in low voltage dry type distribution transformers, or even the larger industrial control transformers. However, emerging technologies may allow for something like this to occur in small industrial control transformers in the future.
