UL 50 Enclosure Types
UL 50 uses “Types” to define and classify the protective characteristics of enclosures.
Among the available UL Types, six meet the needs of common ATS applications.
These are Types 1, 3R, 3RX, 4, 4X and 12
Attributes of Commonly Used UL 50 Types
Of the various UL 50 Types,
Often used for indoor applications: Type 1 and 12
Often used for outdoor applications: Types 3R, 3RX, 4 and 4X
Enclosure Types and Description
Reminder: Proper assessment of environmental conditions at planned equipment locations facilitates the selection of appropriate ATS enclosures.
Enclosure Materials
Type 1,3R, 4 and 12 uses Steel.
Type 3RX and 4X uses Stainless Steel. Both are available in Type 304 and 316 stainless steel.
Additional Information on selecting either Type 304 or Type 316 Stainless Steel Material.
The less expensive Type 304 steel is suited for many outdoor applications.
Type 316 provides additional protection against corrosive salts and chemicals because it contains molybdenum. Type 316 stainless steel can provide the best protection when ATSs will be located in coastal marine environments, at sites near roadways where seasonal deicing salts are used, and at industrial facilities where corrosive chemicals are used.
