How do the QO2175SB and HOM2175SB surge protection devices (SPDs) work?

Issue:
How do the QO2175SB and HOM2175SB surge suppressors work?

Product Line:
Residential Surge Protection Devices (SPDs)

Environment:
TVSS Surge suppressor

Cause:
Correct application for a specific surge suppressor

Resolution:
When the maximum continuous operating voltage (MCOV) is exceeded the surge protection device (SPD) performs two functions:  1) The SPD holds or ``clamps`` the voltage and 2) The SPD diverts the surge current to earth ground until the surge passes.  After the surge passes, no parts need to be replaced.  The SPD resets itself and will do this multiple times until end-of-life.
