How do you size overcurrent protection for a fire pump to comply with NEC requirements?

Product Line:
MCCB

Resolution:
Per the NEC 695.4(B), overcurrent protection for a fire pump has to be sized so that it provides short-circuit protection only. This requires the short circuit protection to be sized so that locked rotor current will not trip it, which is typically about 6x the FLA.  Per NEC 695.6(C), "Power circuits shall not have automatic protection against overloads."

The specifics of NEC article 695 pertaining to fire pump application are subject to local codes and AHJ interpretation, so always check with your electrical inspector before installation to ensure compliance.
