Can a 3 phase contactor or starter be used on a single phase application?

Issue:
3 Phase contactor used in single phase explanation

Product Line:
NEMA and Definite Purpose Contactors and Starters

Environment:
8502 and 8536

Resolution:
For our contactors any two legs can be used to make and break the single phase load.
For starters how the device should be set up will depend on the type of overload relay.
  • For starters with melting alloy overloads any two legs can be wired, but there will need to be thermal units in all three legs.
  • For devices with solid state overload relays current has to pass through all three legs. This can be accomplished by looping a leg through two poles on the starter.
  • For devices with a TeSys T motor management controller you have to wire through the outter two legs, and program the TeSys T for a single phase load.
