Power quality problems are one of the major causes of unscheduled downtime, equipment malfunction and damage. In mining installations, harmonic distortion and low power factor caused by motor loads and variable speed drives are one of the most frequent issues. However, they are often not properly considered during the design phase of the power systems resulting in additional cost and delay during project execution. This paper presents recommendations for the optimization of power factor correction and harmonic management in mining power systems.
