What is AVR (Automatic Voltage Regulation)?
Product Line:
Line-R, Back-UPS, Back-UPS PRO, Smart-UPS and APC AV.
Cause / Resolution:
AVR, also known as Automatic Voltage Stabilizer (AVS), is designed to stabilize the incoming utility voltage to protect connected equipment from conditions such as sags, brownouts, and surges. This feature is included on Line‑Interactive topology UPS systems.
With AVR/AVS technology, the UPS does not switch to battery during moderately high or low input voltages. Instead, it will automatically increase (BOOST) or reduce (TRIM) the incoming voltage to deliver a safe, regulated output. This regulation is performed by routing the input voltage through the internal Automatic Voltage Regulating transformer, without using the battery.
The main benefit of AVR/AVS is that it extends battery life and widens the operating range in which the UPS can remain online without resorting to battery power.
Note: AVR ranges differ across product families and even between models within the same family. For the most accurate information related to your UPS, always refer to the documentation specific to your exact model number, such as the User Manual provided with your unit.
