Issue:
Clarification on the purpose and configuration of the rear serial ports on the SAGE 4400 RTU.
Product:
SAGE 4400 RTU
Environment:
Substation automation systems using SAGE 4400 RTU for communication with IEDs and master stations.
Cause:
Users may be unsure about the number of rear serial ports, their function, and pin assignments for connecting external devices.
Resolution:
The SAGE 4400 RTU rear panel includes 17 RS232 connectors:
- 16 serial ports for communication with IEDs and/or master stations.
- 1 PPP port, which is electrically in parallel with the front PPP port for Point-to-Point Protocol connections.
Each rear serial port uses a DB9 connector with the following pinout:
Notes:
- IRIG-B output is available on all 16 RS232 ports for time synchronization.
- The +5V option on Pin 1 can power auxiliary communication devices (up to 5W total).
- Baud rates are individually configurable per port (300–19,200 bps; PPP supports 38,400 bps).
