Smart-UPS Modular Ultra XBP Not Detected Due to Incorrect XRCC Dial Handle Installation

Issue:

Smart UPS Modular Ultra XBP and its batteries are not detected by the system.  The battery modules initially powered up with a solid green LED but later transitioned to a flashing red LED.

1. Related battery communication troubleshooting articles were reviewed
2. All screws and thumbscrews are fully tightened.
3. All communication connections between the UPS and XBP were inspected
4. The XBP communications card is active (LED is on)
5. The XBP address dial is set to a valid address (1-6)
6. Battery modules are detected if the XBP address dial is set so the window points to positions 4 (down), 8 (left) or C (up) on the switch body.

Resolution:

The XRCC address setting rotary switch handle is installed incorrectly.

In the example shown below, the number 0 shown in the rotary switch handle window is a valid setting and corresponds to Frame 1 per the XRCC label.  However, as seen when the handle is removed, the arrow on the rotary switch dial indicates that the actual switch position is 8.  The Smart UPS Modular Ultra only recognizes address settings 1-6 (switch positions 0 to 5).  Switch position 8 is invalid, so the UPS does not establish communications with the battery modules or XRCC.  The handle is supposed to be installed so the window aligns with the arrow.  In this case, the rotary switch handle was installed in the wrong orientation.

The handle is removeable.  It is not necessary to remove the XRCC from the XBP to remove the handle.

1. Insert a small flat blade screwdriver or similar tool between the grey handle and the white switch body.
2. Gently pry the handle away from the switch body.
3. Reinstall the handle so the opening on the rotary handle is aligned with the arrow indicator on the dial.
4. Rotate the handle so the window corresponds to a valid address on the XRCC label.

NOTE:

• If the XBP is still not detected after verifying the dial position, review related battery communication troubleshooting articles and inspect all communication connections between the UPS and XBP.
• The XRCC should only be removed and serviced by qualified service personnel.
• If XRCC removal or further inspection is required, refer to the applicable Smart-UPS Modular Ultra installation manual before proceeding. -
