Issue:

How does the ION 9000 meter measure / calculate the primary frequency of the power system it is connected to and measuring?

Resolution:

The ION9000 measures primary frequency based on the fundamental component of the voltage waveform. The zero-crossing method is a simpler approach often used in basic meters, where frequency is calculated by measuring the time between successive zero crossings. However, the ION9000 uses DSP techniques, including FFT, to extract the fundamental frequency accurately even under distorted conditions. This is because FFT allows precise separation of the fundamental from harmonics and interharmonics.

Since the ION9000 complies with both standards (IEC 61000-4-30 & IEC 61000-4-7), it is safe to assume that it uses FFT for harmonic analysis and likely the same process for frequency measurement.
