Issue:

When upgrading from an earlier version of Event Notification Module (ENM) to ENM 8.3.3, the installer fails at the step:

Backing up previous historical data

with the error:

data backup failed

Installer logs show:

Cause:

The SQL Server feature xp_cmdshell is disabled by default for security reasons. The ENM installer uses xp_cmdshell During the backup process, causing the failure when it is turned off.

Resolution:

Enable xp_cmdshell temporarily, rerun the installer, and then disable it again for security.

Steps to Enable xp_cmdshell

1. Management Studio** with sysadmin privileges.
2. Open a New Query window and run:

   -- Show advanced options

   EXEC sp_configure 'show advanced options', 1;

   GO

   RECONFIGURE;

   GO

   -- Enable xp_cmdshell

   EXEC sp_configure 'xp_cmdshell', 1;

   GO

   RECONFIGURE;

   GO

   -- Hide advanced options

   EXEC sp_configure 'show advanced options', 0;

   GO

   RECONFIGURE;

   GO
3. Close SQL Server Management Studio.
4. Rerun the ENM installer.
