Issue:
Depending on the unique configurations of each system, a customer may want to change the logging interval for certain devices on the system.

Product Line:

Power Monitoring Expert (PME) 8.x
Power Monitoring Expert (PME) 9.x

Environment:
Power Monitoring Expert (PME) Application Server

IMPORTANT NOTES AND WARNINGS BEFORE PROCEDING:

  1. Warning: Irreparable configuration damage can occur. This procedure should only be performed by users familiar with adjusting/modifying configuration files. Configuration files should be backed up outside of the Power Monitoring Expert root folder prior to performing this procedure.
  2. Note: Increasing the logging interval or number of data points for multiple devices WILL place additional strain on the system and the database. 15-minute logging is usually the default logging interval. If resources on the server are not appropriate, expect the system to slow down.
  3. Expect the database size to grow faster, if not increase in size dramatically. This can lead to databases reaching their size limits (SQL Express) or drives becoming full. Recommendation is to create a Database maintenance plan to mitigate any future issues to the system.
  4. If the device does not have on board recorders (older meters mainly) follow this process seen here: How to setup PC based logging in the ION Enterprise VIP when a device does not have onboard logging capability | Schneider Electric USA

Resolution — "Software Logging":

This resolution involves modifying the logging for specific data points within the "device driver". The Device Driver contains all the different data points that a device will be monitoring/reading mapped to the associated register. There is an option for PME to poll measurements that the device is reading that may not necessarily be logging to the on-board recorder for the device. This is called software logging. Logging can be manually activated and its interval adjusted within the Software Logging menu for the device. More information on Device Divers can be found here Device Type Editor. The Device Drivers can be found in either the path ...\Power Monitoring Expert\config\translators or ...\Power Monitoring Expert\system\translators (default path being C:\Program Files (x86)\Schneider Electric\Power Monitoring Expert\config\translators or C:\Program Files (x86)\Schneider Electric\Power Monitoring Expert\system\translators). Please take note of the name of the device type when looking for the device driver.

Steps are as follows:

  1. Open Management Console on the PME application server and run as administrator.
  2. Navigate to Software Logging by going to Tools → System → Software Logging.
  3. Please read note on Software Logging.
  4. Please find the driver in either the ...\Power Monitoring Expert\config\translators or ...\Power Monitoring Expert\system\translators path. You may have to do some additional navigation within the files prompt window.
  5. Once you have selected the driver a new application window will open. It may open in the background and appear on the bottom toolbar and manually need to be selected.
  6. Once within the "Configure Logging and Calculation" menu it will list all the registers that exist for the device within the driver file (it may be helpful to press on the 'Label' column to sort by name in ascending order).
  7. Scroll down to find the measurement of choice. Click on the name of the measurement to highlight it.
  8. Once highlighted, some options will be available to configure. The main ones of note are the Register "Log" and Log Interval. If you would like the register to be logged, please check the corresponding "Log" box. If you would like to change the interval at which the register is being logged, please adjust the time in the "Log Interval" box (default is 900 seconds or 15 minutes).
  9. Press the "Ok" button in the very bottom right to save the changes. Select "Yes" in the prompt to confirm the changes will be sent to the system.
