IEC 61850 Communication on PowerLogic P5 Protection Relays
Issue:
How to configure and use IEC 61850 protocol for PowerLogic P5 protection relays, including supported features, limitations, and best practices.
Product:
PowerLogic P5 Protection Relay
Environment:
Substation automation systems
Ethernet-based communication networks
IEC 61850-compliant architectures (Editions 1, 2, and 2.1)
Redundancy protocols: PRP, HSR, RSTP
Tools: eSetup Easergy Pro, CET850, FPN Editor
Cause:
IEC 61850 is a standardized protocol for power utility automation, enabling high-speed, interoperable communication between Intelligent Electronic Devices (IEDs). Misconfiguration or lack of understanding of supported features can lead to integration issues, communication failures, or non-compliance with system requirements.
Resolution:
Protocol Overview:
-IEC 61850 is Ethernet-based and supports Editions 1, 2, and 2.1.
-Ensures interoperability and high-speed communication for protection, control, and monitoring.
-Compliant with IEC 61850-6, 7-1 to 7-4, and 8-1 standards.
Capabilities:
-Up to 8 simultaneous client-server associations.
-Peer-to-peer communication via GOOSE messages (4 publishers, 250 digital and 8 analog subscribers).
-GOOSE performance: Class P2 (<10 ms).
-Supports Buffered and Unbuffered Report Control Blocks (RCBs): up to 16 BRCBs and 8 URCBs per Logical Node.
-Control models: Status-only, Direct control (normal/enhanced security), Select-before-operate (SBO, normal/enhanced security).
Configuration:
-Activate IEC 61850 by selecting it as the Ethernet port protocol in the COMMUNICATION menu.
-Use eSetup Easergy Pro for CID file upload and basic settings.
-Use CET850 for advanced SCL editing, dataset creation, and GOOSE configuration.
-Flexible Product Naming (FPN) supported for interoperability with other vendors.
GOOSE Features:
-Simulation and test modes supported.
-Wired-OR logic for input mapping.
-Assign GOOSE inputs via eSetup Easergy Pro or CET850.
File Transfer & Time Sync:
-Disturbance records via sFTP in COMTRADE format.
-Time synchronization via PTP (IEEE 1588), SNTP, or IRIG-B.
Security Considerations:
-IEC 61850 traffic is not encrypted; implement network segmentation, firewalls, and IP whitelisting.
-Use sFTP for secure file transfers.
Limitations:
-Maximum of 3 access points for IEC 61850 (P5x30 models), 2 for P5x20 models.
-CID file size limited to 3 MB; filenames must avoid spaces and non-Latin characters.
