Recommended Replacement Options for Obsolete SEPAM 20/40 Protection Relay Series

Issue

The SEPAM 20 and SEPAM 40 relay series have reached End of Commercialization, and customers request guidance on selecting the appropriate modern replacement.

Cause

Schneider Electric has officially discontinued the SEPAM 20/40 series through an End of Commercialization Notification, released on August 1, 2024.
A modernization path to PowerLogic P-series relays is recommended.

PowerLogic P5 – For demanding and complex applications

Use the P5 when the application requires:

• advanced protection functions
• extensive memory and event/oscillography capacity
• cybersecurity features
• complex automation schemes
• IEC 61850, redundant Ethernet, differential protection, arc‑flash protection

Important ordering note:
The P5 base unit does not include communication modules.
Required communication ports (IEC 61850, Modbus TCP, redundant Ethernet, etc.) must be added as selectable modules depending on the application needs.

• overcurrent/earth‑fault protection

• simpler automation logic
