What are the Default Communication (Comm) Settings on an ION TRAN meter? How to Set the IP Address on an ION Meter with no Display

Issue
Certain ION Meters can be ordered without a display, either integrated front panel, or remote. These types of meters are sometimes called TRAN models, which is short for Transducer Only. The front panel display is the easiest and most reliable method for configuring communications parameters, as it doesn't require a communication connection to the meter before allowing these settings to be altered. Therefore, knowledge of default communications parameters is essential for connecting to the TRAN meter for the first time.

Cause
These models do not have a front display to obtain the Comms settings or configurations

Resolution
ION Setup is the ideal method for initially establishing communications to these TRAN model meters. See below for the default settings for each model group:

ION6200
- Baud Rate = 9600
- Protocol = Modbus
- Serial/Parity = 8N1 (8 data bits, no parity, 1 stop bit)
- Unit ID = 100 + last two digits of serial number (eg. S/N:HA-050300456-03, Unit ID:156).

NOTE: This meter's default protocol is Modbus, not ION. Therefore, this meter must be accessed via ION Setup's Network Mode using the modbus device driver. See "ION Setup: Meter Configuration Software Configuration Guide" (70002-0293-03) for specifics on connecting to an ION6200 with ION Setup for more details.

ION73xx
COM1, COM2, IR
- Baud Rate = 9600
- Protocol = ION
- Serial/Parity = 8N1
- Unit ID = The last four digits of the serial number (eg. S/N:PA-0009B263-01, Unit ID:9263).

Ethernet
- IP Address = None
- Subnet Mask = None
- Default Gateway = None

NOTE: After a factory reset, the Unit ID number defaults to 100 for serial ports. Since the IP address is set to "None" by default, initial communications must be established via serial ports in order to set the IP address.

ION7500, 7600
COM1
- Mode = RS-232
- Baud rate = 9600
- Protocol = ION
- Serial/Parity = 8N1
- Unit ID = The last four digits of the serial number (eg. S/N:PA-0009B263-01, Unit ID:9263).

COM2
- Baud rate = 9600
- Protocol = ION
- Serial/Parity = 8N1
- Unit ID = 101

COM3 (Internal Modem)
- Baud rate = 9600
- Protocol = ION
- Serial/Parity = 8N1
- Unit ID = 102

Ethernet: IP Address, Subnet Mask and Default Gateway use BootP to configure the settings

COM3 (Internal Modem)

Ethernet
- IP Address = 172.16.xxx.xxx where the last two bytes (decimal) match the last two bytes of the meter's MAC address (hex) (eg. MAC address = 00-60-78-01-12-DC, IP Address = 172.16.18.220).
- Subnet Mask = 255.240.0.0
- Default Gateway = 0.0.0.0
IMPORTANT NOTE: if the card was added to the meter at a later date and the above method for finding the IP Address does not work, try using 172.16.255.255, as this has been shown to be applicable in some cases where the card is shipped separately from the meter.

- Mode = RS-485
- Baud Rate = 9600
- Protocol = ION
- Serial/Parity = 8N1
